I Have No Inspiration

How to start writing when you have no ideas

I scrolled through my drafts looking at half-baked headlines and ideas for listicles and one-word thoughts with little else to back them up. Nothing.

“I have no inspiration.”

The title of this article was what I first thought this morning. I kind of think that’s bullshit.

“So, how am I gonna turn this into an article?” There’s another thought I just had. More bullshit.

The truth is, with writing, we’re not always perfectly inspired. I have a routine. I like to write first thing. I get up, I make a coffee, I take my coffee back to bed, I put on my favourite music (tech house playlists auto-generated by youtube right now) and then I sit in bed and I write.

Usually, an idea comes between getting out of bed and making my coffee. Usually by the time the coffee starts to rise out from the base of my espresso pot I know what I’m going to write about. Not this morning.

Avoid Distractions

We live in an age of information. From the moment we wake up we are bombarded with so much data- endless notifications, messages, pictures. 99% of it is useless.

That’s not to say I’m against social media, or smartphones or anything like that…
